Plan of  Work

2022

This Plan of Work contains the goals set forth in my Appraisal for the year 2022 at The Rochester Institute of Technology's Department of Access Services.

Plan of Work: About

Interpreting- Expressive Skills

I will be more effective in my use of Processing Time in both ENG-ASL and ASL-ENG.

  • I realize that I have always relied on prediction skills over processing the language in my interpreting acts. I would like to tap into more processing skills and eventually find a happy medium between the two.

  • I will be using deliberate practice, as well as be on the lookout for any Professional Development opportunities that will support this skill. Most Integrated Model of Interpreting workshops are very helpful for that development

  • Success will look like my ability to walk into an on call assignment and not immediately interpreting the signs I see/ words I hear, and I take time to hear a sentence/idea before interpreting.

  • Along with bi-weekly deliberate practice, I will be slowly increasing my processing time in my interpreting assignments, always ensuring that message equivalence is my top priority.

Diversity and Inclusion

Increase effectiveness and confidence in my Interpreting skill from ASL-ENG

  • I will facilitate a Diversity Equity and Inclusion meeting bi-weekly with the current Randleman Proteges

  • I will participate in a discussion bi-weekly with fellow staff interpreters in an on-going PDC

  • I will facilitate conversations in bi-weekly CTs

  • I will reach out to people to come in and have discussions with us in the Randleman Group. Facilitate fruitful discussions within these meetings.

  • I will be present and open to discussions in my PDC, and elicit feedback for my own humility.

  • Success will look like

    • Being more knowledgeable in as many cultures and backgrounds.

    • Being a point of contact for issues around DEI that I feel I can be beneficial for others

    • Being a Point of Contact for Randleman Protege and other newcomers in the department as a safe person to ask questions to.

  • I am also above 30% complete on my Cultural Humility Certification

Professional Commitment

I will be available to support the Professional Development Program at DAS

  • The PDP is integral to the success of DAS and I find that with more motivation from staff, morre opportunities for the community as a whole to benefit.

  • I will learn more about the program by involving myself in the PD Committee, offering my help on extra projects, and be a support person to the program lead (Currently Eliza Fowler)

  • The PD Committee appointments are typically 2 years and I am 1 year through my 2 year appointment

  • Success will look like being a staple in the PD Program and having the answers more readily available in regards to PD rather than “getting back to that”

Communication

I will improve my communication skills amongst all individuals I work with

  • As I have run a  Professional Development workshop for the department, I want to ensure I am constantly working on my own communication skills

  • I will be mindful of how I communicate, and the implications of my actions. Also, I will take into account how my communication will influence others experiences in the work environment

  • Having a decent amount of examples from my personal experience to use during a workshop, and have more positive interactions with my peers than negative ones

Supporting Others

I will be a supportive and dependable Mentor

  • Mentors play a vital role in the current and future success of novice interpreters (and even interpreters who have been in the field for many years) and I want to be the best mentor I can be for any mentee with whom i work

  • I will check in with my Mentee regularly  to ensure we are working well together and I will constantly improve my approach to match their needs

  • Working with my mentee, assessing their skill, providing feedback and tools, as well as supporting them in their lives not solely relating to their interpreting skill

  • Success will look like my mentee feel supported and successful in their interpreting skill development
